Home stay experience
A home stay with a Nepalese family is a special experience and an excellent opportunity to experience the real Nepalese life!
Your hosts will do everything to make you feel at home. However, it is good to realize that a home stay is only suitable for people who are willing to adapt to the daily routine, the simple standard of living and the limited facilities of the host family.
There are home stays available in different parts of the country, with Newari`s, Gurungs, Tamang, Hindus, Tibetan refugees, the Tharu of southern Nepal ,etc... It is also possible to stay in some monasteries and live together with the Buddhist monks.
Each home stay is different. Some home stays are very basic, others are small guesthouses (2 to 4 rooms) run by a family. These are private home stays. We can organize a private home stay for you in Dhading, near Bardia National Park and in Thulo Parsel.
In some villages there is a whole home stay program and some of the home stays are run by a whole community, the community home stays. We can organize a community home stay for you in the following locations: Bardia, Panauti, Nagarkot, Ilam, Palpa, Patan, Nuwakot, Chitwan,...
In Nepal, it is custom that there are multiple generations living in one house. So this can be like this in your host family. When people get married, the wife lives with her husband's family.
You can spend the day in your home stay like you wish. Help your host family in their daily activities, such as farming vegetables on the field, buying the groceries on the market or preparing meals. Or go exploring the village and visit the local school or health post. Often the environment of a rural home stay is also ideal for day walks in the countryside.
In a home stay you often sleep in a very basic room, with only beds in the room. These beds are rather hard beds and often there are no sheets available but only blankets. There is not always a bathroom in the house of your hosts: you can use a sari to wrap around you when you refresh yourself at the local water source.
Some luggage to take if there is a home stay included in your itinerary: a sleeping bag liner / sleeping bag, toilet paper (in Nepal, they don`t have the habit of using toilet paper; they use water), some toiletries (like biodegradable soap or shampoo), a sari to wrap around you when you are washing yourself, slippers...
