We encourage our local business partners, such as accommodations, providers of excursions, transport companies actively to offer their services in a sustainable way and make progress.
We train and make our employees and freelance guides aware about sustainability during trekking and round trips. We encourage them to participate in workshops around this subject by local NGO`s. Sustainability is an integral part of the training we provide to all our employees.
We create awareness around sustainability with our customers during the design of their travel, during a short briefing on the spot at the beginning of their trip and by providing information about the theme on our blog and the website of some of our Western partners.
Our sustainability policy has as goal to minimalize all the negative effects on the natural and social environment in Nepal and optimize the benefits for the local people.
To guide us in working towards sustainability, we created some guidelines we follow in our company.
Sustainable travel is a never ending process. We strive to make continuous efforts to work towards sustainability. You find our two yearly report here.
REPORT ON SUSTAINABILITY
Since January 2018 we reached the Travelife CERTIFIED level in the Travelife program.
Public sustainability report of 2019
In this small report, we evaluate our sustainable efforts of the last year. Although we are a small company, we are convinced that we can do our part.
Here under we listed some of our achievements throughout the last year:
REDUCING SINGLE USE PLASTICS
We managed to convince all of our accommodation supplier to put water refill stations in their hotel, so that are customers can refill their bottles instead of having to buy single use plastic water bottles
We started engaging ourselves in Refill My Bottle community, and are convincing hotels and restaurants and other businesses to sign up as a refill station. We promote this among stake holders. We intend to do even more promotion in 2020.
Together with 2 of our partners, we let a women cooperation in Chitwan make tote bags as a welcome gift for their customers. Like this we want to eliminate single use plastic bags.
We increased partnerships with small scale family run accommodations, with community home stays and with social enterprises. We further encouraged our accommodation providers to make their accommodations more sustainable.
We bought a bicycle, which is at the disposal of our freelancers, our staff our management if they want an alternative to walking.
We had a workshop about sustainable driving with our transportation company and their drivers. Our code of conduct was explained in detail to them.
We started promoting some extra activities organized by or local NGO`s or by marginalized individuals or communities. By putting them as optional in our travel itineraries, our customers are encouraged to do some of these activities.
We encouraged this year ethical activities with elephants, like a Happy Hour or an elephant bush walk, where you walk behind an elephant in his natural environment. After checking them on the spot, we are convinced this is a great way to create awareness around this theme.
TRAINING OUR STAFF
We provided additional trainings on sustainability to our freelancers: they are taking part in our pre-seasonal in-house trainings and are encouraged to do the Travelife online trainings for guides.
We`ve sent 3 of our porters to a month basic conversational English class.
GIVING BACK – DONATIONS & COOPERATION
We decided to donate each year to 2 different ngo`s. This year we made a donation to Stand Up 4 Elephants and the Red Panda Network, 2 NGO`s with positive impact on wildlife in Nepal. We also encouraged other people to donate through our social media channels.
We participate in a creative Think Thank, to get more young females into tourism, and to find ways to train them and get them motivated. We also talked to other ngo`s and stake holders about this and got them in touch.
We engaged in The Children`s Code against abuse of children in tourism. We trained our staff on this subject and implemented this in all our other documents. There is a clear policy and procedure into place in our company: we don`t tolerate child abuse of any kind.
