Do I need travel insurance in Nepal?
We strongly advise you to take a travel- and or cancellation insurance with the booking of your trip. A travel insurance is compulsory if you book your trip with Nepal Inside Out.
Even if you are not planning to go on a trek in the Himalayas, it is always wise to have a travel insurance. Nepal is a developing country, where the roads are not in good condition, and road or other accidents can happen daily. Above this, as home of the Himalayas, it is a seismological active area, which makes that earthquakes can always happen.
Think ahead: what activities are on your bucketlist for your Nepal trip and which ones are covered or not covered by your insurance policy. Think of rafting, parahawking, canyoning, canoeing, kayakking, paragliding, deltaflying, balloon trips, mountainbiking, bungeejumping and peak climbing.
Check with your insurance company if they are covered or if you can add them for an extra fee.
Do I need travel insurance during trekking?
A trekking in the Himalayas is a whole adventure. If you don`t have insurance while trekking, you put your life and health in danger but it will also cost you a lot of money.
Most obvious injuries during trekking are things like a broken bone or a sprained ankle. Less obvious are high altitude sickness, hypothermia, food poisoning and respiratory infections. In case one of these things happens to you, you don`t want to walk back for days to a hospital in Kathmandu. You`ll need a helicopter to take you down. A helicopter evacuation in Nepal costs quickly more than 5000 USD. Apart from the hospital treatment or medical services in the flight, these bills come in surplus.
Since there are not a lot of good hospitals in Nepal, the ones that do deliver sufficient medical care will charge you a huge amount. If you don`t have a travel insurance, these bills will be enormous. I remember that the extraction of one of my teeth, which roots got severely infected while in the mountains, costed me nearly 200 USD.
How big is the chance that it happens to me?
I can reassure you, it can happen to anyone. During nearly all the treks we`ve done ourselves, at least one person needed to go back due to sickness or injury. Helicopter evacuations happen daily around us, in most of the cases for people with high altitude disease.
A lot of people don`t take enough preventions to avoid altitude disease or don`t listen to their body. Some people ignore the signs, until they start vomiting and are unconscious. The only life saver in these cases is a helicopter evacuation straight into a decompression chamber in one of the hospitals in Kathmandu.
